Easy D.I.Y. Message in a Bottle
Hello my Creative Friends,
I hope you are all well. In Today’s Blog Post I will show you how to re-use a glass water bottle and change it into a Beach Themed Message in a Bottle. It is both budget and beginner friendly, and I hope you will try this D.I.Y. Summer Craft.
Washing the Bottles
I bought two bottles of water. I loved the appearance of the bottles and knew I could use them in my crafts. The fact I didn’t have to spray paint them or change the outside appearance was an added bonus. They were already a gorgeous shade of blue.
There was a label on the neck of the bottles. I soaked the two bottles in the sink with warm water and washing up liquid for about 30 minutes. I peeled off the labels, dried the bottles and allowed the inside of the bottles to air-dry.
Adding the String to the Neck of the Bottle
I had a handbag for a few years but then the inside fabric ripped, I am not good at sewing so instead I cut the outside fabric off the front of the handbag (which was lovely). I also removed the handles and anything I thought I could re-use. I discarded the frayed fabric from the inside of the handbag and any little bits which I no longer needed.
The string I am using for this craft came from the handles of the handbag. I loved the cream colour and thought they would be a wonderful addition to the blue glass bottles. Natural Jute Roll String.
I plugged in my hot glue gun and let it heat up for 5 minutes. Hot Glue Gun.
I put a small strip of hot glue on the back of the bottle, on the bottom of the neck.
I placed the string on top of the hot glue, and held it in place for a few seconds using a paintbrush. This is to prevent getting burned as the glue will be hot.
I wrapped the string around the front of the bottle. I had a firm grip on the string and kept it as close to the layer underneath as possible. There is no need to add any more glue until the neck of the bottle is filled with the string.
I continued with this process of wrapping the string all around the neck of the blue glass bottle.
When the neck of the bottle was filled with string, I put some hot glue on the back of the bottle, underneath the string at the top of the neck. I held it in place again with a paintbrush for a few seconds. I then cut the remainder of the string off. This finished adding the string to the bottle.
Beach Themed Summer Paper for the Message in a Bottle
I had an ‘A4 160 (g/m2) “Summer” Patterned Scrapbook Paper Pad by Crelando’. It had two sheets of beach themed paper, which I thought would be perfect for this Message in a Bottle Craft. Deep Blue Sea Collection Kit Paper, red, Navy, White.Kaisercraft Paper Pad, Sandy Toes Salty Kisses. Helz Cuppleditch Beach Life.
I cut out the paper along the white line at the top of the sheet. I rolled it up along the table and placed it into the glass bottle.
Shells to Embellish the Message in a Bottle
I bought a packet of Shells by ‘Icon Craft’. I liked the colour and shape of them and how realistic they looked. Mixed Beach Seashells.
I picked a small shell to stick to the side of the bottle. I put hot glue along the edges of the shell, and held it in place on the string on the bottle for about 10 seconds.
I added a bigger shell to the bottom of the front side of the glass bottle. I also hot glued this in place.
This completed the first D.I.Y. Message in a Bottle. I was happy with how it came together. I put it beside the other bottle to see the difference.
I repeated the same steps to complete the second beach themed message in a bottle. The only difference was I put the small shell on the opposite side of the string to co-ordinate with the first bottle when standing side by side.
Conclusion
This is the end result of the two blue glass water bottles transformed into an easy D.I.Y. Message in a Bottle Beach Themed Craft. I hope I provided some inspiration for your next bottle craft activity.
I think they are lovely summer, beach inspired, home decor ornaments. They would be a beautiful addition to each side of a mantle piece over a fireplace, or each side on a shelf. They could also be separated into two corners of a room, placed on a tray with other shells or summer pieces, or on a table in the hallway. If you had nautical embellishments such as an anchor or wheel they could also be attached to the string on the bottles. They would be the perfect summer decor additions in a guest bedroom. Don’t be afraid to make them personal to you and your taste and requirements. Nautical Decor Sea Shells. Nautical Ribbon. Nautical Wooden Boat Anchor Pendants. Crafters Workshop Mixed Media Stencils Set.
If you have children and have visited the beach with them, they could draw a picture of the day and that could be added to the inside of the message in the bottle. You could write the date on it and have it to look back on fondly in years to come.
If the children are slightly older they could write their memories of the day; their adventures, what they ate on the beach, the fun games they played, if they collected anything, or saw anything new or different walking along the beach, colours, shapes or textures. Any little found objects could be added to the bottom of the bottles, they could keep the bottle in their bedroom to remind them of their summer fun. If you have a bag of sand for your children for sand play, you could also pour a small amount into the bottom of the bottle before putting in the message for an added beach effect. The possibilities are endless really. Natural Sand.
Have you made a Message in a Bottle Craft before? Would you do anything different in your approach? If you haven’t I hope I’ve provided some good examples of what you could use if you were hoping to make an easy, quick, d.i.y. beach inspired craft. Let me know how you get on. Happy Creating everyone.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my Blog.
Always Grateful,
T.D.C.
