Gold Spray Painted Wine Bottle with Love Quote
Hello my Creative Friends,
I hope you are all well. In Today’s Blog Post I will show you how to spray paint a wine bottle and add a love quote to it. It will transform a wine bottle into a decorative display item. It would look lovely on a shelf, or a table / dresser / side cabinet. It could also be given to a friend or loved one as a housewarming / anniversary / engagement or wedding gift.
There are so many possibilities with this craft. A different quote or colour spray paint would totally change the appearance. Have fun and find what works for you and your requirements. Feel free to use what you have, you can also get ideas from the products I used.
Preparing the Wine Bottle before Painting
I started by putting the empty wine bottle and lid into the sink. I filled the sink with hot water and washing up liquid. I left them to soak for about an hour.
I emptied the water from the sink. I peeled the label off the wine bottle. It came off easily after being left to soak. I rinsed the bottle under the tap, and rubbed a dishcloth around the edges where the label was to remove any outline. I dried the bottle and lid. I left them to the side to fully air dry the inside of the bottle.
Spray Painting the Wine Bottle
The next day I brought my wine bottle and lid out to the shed. I put the bottle upside down and balanced it on the spout of a watering can. This was to ensure I sprayed every angle of the bottle without touching or moving it. You can use whatever props you have at home, something you don’t mind getting spray paint on.
The Spray Paint I used was ‘Deco Style Metal Effect Spray Paint’ in Gold. Gold Matte Spray Paint.
Make sure to spray paint in a well ventilated area. I had the door of the shed open at all times while spray painting.
I shook the can for several seconds. I removed the lid, and held the can approximately 15cm away from the bottle. I sprayed the base of the bottle first. I then sprayed from the base to the top of the bottle. I worked my way around the bottle until I had one light layer of spray paint on the whole bottle. Gold Matte Spray Paint.
I would spray one section from the bottom of the bottle to the top. I would then stop, give the spray can a quick shake, then move to the next section and spray. I repeated this process all around the bottle.
As I was spray painting each section from the bottom to the top, I kept my finger down on the nozzle. I didn’t stop in the mid-section of the bottle. This was to ensure a clean, even application, and to prevent blotches.
I spray painted the top and sides of the lid.
I spray painted the second layer of the bottle when the first layer was dry. Gold Matte Spray Paint.
I added a second layer of gold spray paint onto the lid.
I applied a third layer of spray paint to the bottle. Gold Matte Spray Paint.
I sprayed the lid of the wine bottle for a third time.
I added a fourth and final layer of gold spray paint to the wine bottle. Gold Matte Spray Paint.
I sprayed the fourth and final layer of spray paint to the lid.
It didn’t take long for each layer of spray paint to dry. It was probably fine to re-spray after 20-25 minutes but I left mine for an hour between each application.
I left the bottle and lid in the shed to cure for 2 days, after the final coat of spray paint.
Decorating the Spray Painted Wine Bottle
I brought the wine bottle and lid inside. I was delighted with the colour and even application. I put the lid back on the bottle.
I wanted the bottle to be eye-catching so I attached a colourful ‘Butterfly Decorative 5-D Sticker’ to the mid-section of the bottle. Wall Decal Butterfly.
I searched for love quotes on pinterest. I found one I liked. I thought the quote complemented the butterfly sticker beautifully. I added the quote by using a uni POSCA white paint pen 0.7mm. Uni Posca White Paint Pen.
I’m not sure if you can read the full quote from the photograph. It says “LOVE is like a butterfly, it goes where it pleases, and pleases where it goes”. I thought it was a meaningful but short quote and it was perfect for the bottle.
A peach and gold diamante love heart sticker was attached to the bottom of the bottle. Blissful Hearts Metallic Stickers. Felt Stickers Stitched Hearts.
I added a purple mini bow to the neck of the bottle. 100 Mixed Satin Ribbon Bows. This was stuck down using ‘Glue Dots’. Glue Dots.
One last peach and gold diamante love heart sticker completed this wine bottle craft. It was placed at the top of the wine bottle. Blissful Hearts Metallic Stickers.
Conclusion
I hope this wine bottle tutorial has inspired you to get creative. There were only a handful of products used for this project. It is a budget friendly activity. I love re-using glass bottles and changing the look and purpose of them. It can be such a shame to throw them out.
